SHARE THE VISION
Many share a vision for the creation of health promoting places and spaces. Improvements in Primary Prevention are known to be the sustainable route to the creation of a healthy community.
But we all know that this won’t happen on its own. Positive interventions are also required if we are to use the rural and urban realm to promote health and wellbeing, to reduce avoidable ill-health, to address the effects of Climate Change and to deliver Biodiversity enhancement.
Parks are important “Determinants of Health”. These are physical attributes in the environment which have a direct bearing on health and wellbeing. The ‘Parks for Health Toolkit’ allows these elements to be assessed, and practical opportunities for improvements and new interventions to be identified. The Toolkit also forms the basis for the development of Park based health strategies, the analysis of multiple parks, and the integration of Parks and Green Spaces alongside Public Health, Social Prescribing and Workplace Wellbeing within Primary Prevention.
Together these initiatives can guide park management, reduce the maintenance costs of Parks and Green Spaces, contribute to improvements in mental wellbeing and levels of physical activity, and lead to a reduction in the future cost of clinical interventions and in Adult and Social Care; in short a happier healthier nation.
